21. Inlandsbanan, Sweden
Swedish Lapland, one of Europe’s last wildernesses, is a perfect place to experience the Midnight Sun – and to do so by train. Travelling 850 miles north from central Sweden, Inlandsbanan, a privately owned “inland railway”, goes beyond the Arctic Circle. Its stops include the town of Jokkmokk, where the Midnight Sun can be seen for most of June and the beginning of July.
This is quintessential “slow travel”, an unhurried journey attracting around 7,000 passengers over the summer season. The smart little trains have comfortable reclining airline-style seats and English-speaking “hosts”. They serve snacks, soft drinks and tea and coffee, and meal breaks are taken at station restaurants and cafés, with orders phoned ahead from the train. The trips include overnight stopovers at hotels along the route, guided tours, museums and excursions.
Inlandsbanan (0046 771 535353; inlandsbanan.se) offers a seven-night Taste of Lapland package, including overnight stay in Jokkmokk, but excluding international flights, from 11,900 Swedish kronor (about £1,000).
