Discover the beautiful landscapes of northern and Arctic Sweden, covered in sparkling white snow. Stops are made along the way to experience the rich cultural heritage of this part of Sweden. We visit sights, sample delicacies and enjoy what Norrland and Lapland have to offer.
Good food is an important part of the experience, and many meals are served in the restaurant carriage, often with spectacular views over a lake or one of the mighty rivers of the north. At selected local restaurants we stop to eat the best food the region has to offer.
Welcome to an unforgettable journey across northern Sweden and Swedish Lapland!
Please note that the program is preliminary
The first stretch of the trip goes along the main line between Gävle and Järvsö, with lunch in the onboard restaurant carriage. In Järvsö, we stop at Stenegård, one of Hälsingland's most well-known and popular tourist destinations. Stenegård caters to all tastes, with a Visitor Center for the World Heritage Site Hälsingegårdar (decorated farmhouses), culture in various forms, crafts and building care, cafeteria and restaurant. During the evening, a well-prepared dinner is served onboard the train. May we suggest a drink in the bar, before finally retiring to the comfortable train compartments.
We wake up in Östersund and take a chartered bus to the island of Frösön for a tasty hotel breakfast at Quality Hotel Frösöpark. After a shower and relaxation in their spa it is time for a guided tour around Frösön and Östersund before we return to the train. The steam locomotive is connected, and we travel northward along the Inlandsbanan, through deep spruce forests and over mighty rivers. We have lunch on board, and a sumptuous dinner is served at the award-winning restaurant Bergman’s Fish & Wild in Vilhelmina.
After breakfast onboard we visit the Inlandsbanan Museum in Sorsele. Located in an old warehouse, the exhibition tells about Inlandsbanan's centennial history - from the first ideas of a railroad through the interior of Sweden in the 19th century, to the 1990s with the formation of Inlandsbanan's limited liability company (IBAB) and today's passenger and freight traffic. The next stop is in the town Arvidsjaur with the possibility of a shower, and a guided bus tour where we visit the Sami churchtown of Lappstaden and have lunch at Hotel Laponia. We continue north along Inlandsbanan and stop at the Arctic Circle.
After breakfast we stop in the arctic town of Jokkmokk and visit the Ájtte Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum before continuing our trip towards Gällivare. Lunch is served on the train. After a relaxing break at Quality Hotel Laplands relax, it's time for some sightseeing in the mining town of Malmberget and a visit to mount Dundret. It is Walpurgis Eve, and we will celebrate with a delicious dinner on the top of the mountain with spectacular views over 1/11 of Sweden, weather permitting. If lucky we might even see the winter season’s last northern lights! Late in the evening, the train travels south on the main line and we are softly cradled to sleep.
Travelling south we make a stop in the centre of the county of Jämtland, at the unique Thai Pavilion, ten thousand kilometers from its homeland, and the only royal pavilion outside Thailand. After lunch, we also visit the Dead Waterfall, Sweden’s greatest environmental disaster ever, dating back to 1796.
After a last dinner on board we arrive back in Gävle at approximately 5.30 pm.
