Join us for an exciting train journey and Hurtigruten coastal cruise, with special focus on Nordic cuisine and culture. A tour leader specialised in gastronomy will accompany the group.
This tour combines the historic and unique travel routes of two countries, Inlandsbanan and Hurtigruten. This trip allows you to enjoy mountain air and sea breeze, while our expert guide enables you to make the most of the experience.
On the way north, you travel through unspoilt nature and the World Heritage Laponia, with mountains, lakes and rapids. Your trip takes you through a Sami cultural landscape that has been inhabited since the Ice Age.
Here, you will be able to sample good food traditions and beautiful handicrafts. On your journey south, the venerable Hurtigruten will take you through the enchanted lands of the Norwegian fjords down to Trondheim.
Make your own way to Östersund, where your package tour will begin. In the evening, you will meet your tour leader and travel companions for a Get Together dinner including a visit at the chocolate shop Telogott where you will get to taste cheese and chocolate. If you arrive during the day, you will find lots to see and do. Do visit our website visitostersund.se or visit our tourist information office in person for tips and information about different events.
After a delicious breakfast, your tour leader will meet you for a Culinary guided coach trip around the beautiful Lake Storsjön area. The route mostly follows the shoreline of the lake and the trip includes lunch in a popular farm restaurant that has its own dairy and is reached by ferry. You will also see Frösö Church, with its magical view of the Oviksfjällen mountains.
In the evening, we recommend a visit to one of the city’s many restaurants.
After breakfast, we will make the short journey by foot to the smaller railway station Östersund Västra, where your tour leader will meet you and you will board the train for the first stage of the journey on Inlandsbanan. The journey takes you through Jämtland and north towards Lapland. You will travel past deep forests, rapids and distant mountains. This is also the land of the reindeer, so don’t be surprised if you spot both reindeer and bears along the track. On board the train you will experience a Sami “slow food taste workshop”. Before arriving in Jokkmokk you will pass the Arctic Circle, the border to the Land of the Midnight Sun. In the evening, there is a chocolate tasting event – covering everything from Maya to Marabou!
Jokkmokk is steeped in Sami culture and this is very noticeable today. You can learn more about Sami history at Ájtte, the Swedish Mountain and Sami Museum, and also witness Sami craft skills close up at the tin factory Jokkmokks Tenn. You might also want to visit two special churches. In the evening, Inlandsbanan takes you through the World Heritage Laponia, which has mountains, lakes, delta landscapes, primeval forests and a number of glaciers. This is a Sami cultural landscape, inhabited since the Ice Age, and with a diversity of flora and fauna. In Gällivare, a guided tour is included in the package, during which you will find out more about the urban transformation of Malmberget and Kiruna.
The trip continues on the Malmbanan (Iron Ore) railway, past Kiruna, the town that is being relocated, and onwards to Abisko National Park, home to Kebnekaise mountain. Soon thereafter, you reach the border between Sweden and Norway, and a scenic journey takes you to Narvik. From Narvik, we will continue by coach to the port of Harstad, gateway to the beautiful Lofoten.
In the morning, you embark on Hurtigruten, which has been operating a service along the Norwegian coast for more than 100 years. The ship enters Trollfjorden and turns around there, enabling you to admire the spectacular natural scenery, before making port in Svolvaer, the main town in Lofoten, in the evening. Take the opportunity to leave the ship and have a look around. Hurtigruten arranges several interesting excursions that you can book.
This days is spent travelling along the Helgeland coast, which features more than 1,000 islands and one little fishing village after another. You cross the Arctic Circle on your way south in the morning, and you will also see Seven Sisters, seven beautiful mountain peaks which are 1,000 metres high.
When you awake, you will be in Trondheim. Here, there is an opportunity to join the tour leader for a tour of the magnificent Nidaros Cathedral and the fishing port of Ravnkloa before the train to Östersund departs in the afternoon.
The package tour ends today after a nice breakfast at the hotel.
