February 1918 is an important milestone in Vilhelmina's history. A cool winter day opened the new railway to Vilhelmina. For eleven years, the construction of the Inlandsbanan had been ongoing and it would last until 1937 before the railway was completed in its entirety, from Kristinehamn in the south to Gällivare in the north. By this time, the Inlandsbanan was seen as an investment that would strengthen northern Sweden as it became easier to exploit natural resources such as forest, water, and ore.
